May 17th–May 31st, 2020

This study tour allows students the opportunity to experience life in Peru from the temperate North Coast desert to the beautiful Andes mountains. We’ll eat delicious Peruvian food and visit archaeological sites such as Machu Picchu and a pre-Inca pyramid, as well as beautiful Colonial towns and churches in and around Lima, Trujillo, and Cusco. Through a week-long homestay, students will get a glimpse of life in Cusco with experienced local families. Hands-on ceramics and weaving workshops introduce students to age-old Peruvian traditions.

This tour offers 4 upper-level courses in History, Anthropology, Environmental Studies, Latin American Studies, or Museum Studies, AND ELAW.

SMCM has offered this tour bi-annually for 13 years in conjunction with a local Cusco liaison, Centro Tinku, who arranges all travel details and shepherds our group in Peru.

Tour Leaders:

Dr. Adriana Mariel Brodsky, Associate Professor of History ambrodsky@smcm.edu

Dr. Brodsky brings expertise in the area of colonial and contemporary Latin American History as well as personal experience living and traveling throughout South America. Dr. Brodsky has been the co-leader of this Study Tour since 2007 and has also taken St. Mary’s Nitze students to Argentina.  She is a native Spanish speaker.

Dr. Ruth Anne Phillips, Art History, raphillips@smcm.edu

Dr. Phillips lends her expertise in Art History and Archaeology of Pre-Columbian cultures of the Andes and her own love of travel to all places Latin America, including South America. Dr. Phillips has co-led the tour bi-annually since 2013. She speaks Spanish at an advanced level.
