Research Administrator, Jenn Kersch, works directly with the Director of Research and Sponsored Programs, Leslie Mangold, to provide non-fiscal post-award services to PI/PDs who have obtained external awards. Leslie and Jenn work together with PI/PDs and the following groups and individuals to ensure compliance with the requirements of funding entities and internal policies and procedures.
Business Office
Grant Accountant, Amanda Pilkerton
- Assists with setting up accounts for new awards
- Reviews grant expenses for compliance with award
- Reconciles grant expenses to the awarded budget (i.e. match CARS objects with the award budget)
- Invoices granting agency for expenses incurred
- Reconciles revenue received with expenses
- Files interim and final financial reports
- Calculates and posts indirect costs when applicable
- Makes sure we're following OMB Circulars A-21, A-110, and A-133, GAAP, and any other State or Federal regulations
Fiscal Administrators
- Coordinate fiscal post-award management with Grants Accountant & faculty
- Assist with award budget management, payroll, orders, reimbursement, invoices, activity logs, and CARS reports
Note: PI/PDs have ultimate responsibility for award compliance and expense management; completion of HR payroll documents is required before PI/PD or student can begin work on a sponsored project
The Institutional Review Board (IRB)

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) evaluates research using human participants that is conducted by members of the St. Mary’s College of Maryland community. The IRB operates under the guidelines enacted by the Office of Human Research Protection, a branch of the U.S. government’s Food and Drug Administration.
The IRB reviews all human subject research including proposed changes in previously approved human subject research. The IRB has the authority to approve, require modification in, or disapprove all human subject research.
The IRB also has the authority to suspend or terminate the approval of previously approved human subject research that is not being conducted per the IRB’s requirements or that has been associated with unexpected, serious harm to subjects.
St. Mary's IACUC

According to U.S. federal law, institutions that use laboratory animals for research or instructional purposes must establish an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) to oversee and evaluate all aspects of the institution's animal care and use program. All research at St. Mary’s College (including classroom activities and SMP research) involving non-human vertebrate animals must be reviewed and approved by the St. Mary's IACUC.
