Three of AAC&U’s Summer Institutes—the Institute on General Education and Assessment, the Institute on High-Impact Practices and Student Success, and the Institute on Integrative Learning and the Departments—offer campus teams a time and place for sustained collaboration. The teams each work on a project of importance to their individual campuses.The PKAL Summer Leadership Institute is designed for early and mid-career STEM faculty members.
Institute on General Education and Assessment

The Institute on General Education and Assessment provides campus teams with opportunities to refine and advance general education programs and their assessment. Teams will explore intentional, well-defined, and meaningfully assessed models of general education; processes of redesign; and the implementation of highly effective practices aligned with the Essential Learning Outcomes.
Institute on High-Impact Practices and Student Success

The Institute on High-Impact Practices and Student Success helps campuses, higher education systems, and consortia identify the assets students bring to college, make intentional and evidence-based use of Essential Learning Outcomes, and devise integrative plans to advance inclusion and high levels of learning for all students. Interested campus teams are invited to submit an application indicating current institutional efforts to make excellence inclusive and what they hope to achieve by participating.
Institute on Integrative Learning and the Departments

The Institute on Integrative Learning and the Departments is intended for colleges and universities interested in developing faculty and departmental leadership for advancing programs and curricula for integrative learning. Such programs and curricula build students’ capacity to integrate their learning—across general education, majors, and the co-curriculum, as well as prior professional, academic, and life experiences inside and outside the classroom.

The PKAL Summer Leadership Institute is designed for both early- and mid-career STEM faculty engaged in leading projects aimed at transforming undergraduate STEM education in their classrooms, departments, and institutions. Through a variety of approaches to experiential learning, this Institute empowers its participants to lead change with courage; embrace diverse perspectives with authenticity and legitimacy; and communicate bold, new ideas with thoughtfulness and clarity. To date, over 40 percent of Institute alumni currently hold positions of leadership on their home campuses.
