Pi Delta Phi
In Spring 2017, St. Mary’s College of Maryland inaugurated the college’s first ever chapter of Pi Delta Phi, the National French Honor Society. The goal of Pi Delta Phi “is to recognize outstanding scholarship in the French language and Francophone literatures, to increase the knowledge and appreciation of Americans for the cultural contributions of the French-speaking world, and to stimulate and to encourage French and francophone cultural activities” (https://www.pideltaphi.org/about).
Students with at least one upper-division French course and a GPA (in French and overall) of 3.0 or higher are eligible to apply. In addition to this honor (which can also be listed on a C.V.) students receive red and blue cords to wear at graduation, a pin, and a certificate of membership. Members are also eligible to apply for scholarships for summer study abroad in Aix-en-Provence and the University of Québec at Chicoutimi.
Interested students should check out the Pi Delta Phi website (https://www.pideltaphi.org/) and/or contact St. Mary’s College Pi Delta Phi Chapter moderator Dr. George MacLeod (gsmacleod@smcm.edu).
