All research (including classroom activities and SMP research) involving vertebrate animals must be approved by the St. Mary’s College of Maryland Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). Submit new protocols to the chair at iacuc@smcm.edu by one of the deadlines (listed on the “Protocol Schedule” page). The committee will review each protocol after the deadline to make a decision (approved, requires modifications, or withhold approval). Protocols remain valid for 3 years from the date of approval, and each active protocol will be required to submit a yearly IACUC Protocol Update Form for record and reporting purposes. The IACUC Protocol Update Form can also be used to close a completed research protocol.
Submit modifications to existing protocols to the chair at iacuc@smcm.edu using the IACUC Amendment Request Form at any time during the semester for a designated member review.
Any animal health or care related concerns can be documented using the SMCM IACUC Incident Form. These can be emailed to the chair at iacuc@smcm.edu or dropped off anonymously in his mailbox located in Schaefer Hall 244 (second floor).
According to U.S. federal law, institutions that use laboratory animals for research or instructional purposes must establish an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) to oversee and evaluate all aspects of the institution’s animal care and use program. – http://www.iacuc.org/
