Assistant Professor of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies
The Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSX) Program at St. Mary’s College of Maryland is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, beginning August 2025. WGSX is an interdisciplinary program offering an undergraduate minor and major in the study of gender and sexuality as categories of analysis and experience that intersect with race, class, ethnicity, citizenship, and other forms of difference. Teaching responsibilities will include Introduction to Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies each semester, a 200- or 300-level feminist/queer theory course once a year, and topics courses in the candidate’s areas of expertise. The teaching load at St. Mary’s is 12 credits (3 courses) per semester. All professors are expected to contribute to the college- wide core curriculum as well as to their departmental curriculum.
Qualifications: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies or a related field and be committed to excellence in undergraduate teaching. Applicants with expertise in any area of Feminist/Queer Studies broadly defined, in any discipline with a clear commitment to gender- focused interdisciplinary work and significant coursework, teaching, research, or professional activity in Women, Gender, and/or Sexuality Studies are encouraged to apply. We are particularly interested in applicants who approach gender and sexuality through transnational lenses, with an emphasis on Black and/or Indigenous experiences and perspectives. We welcome scholars grounded in interdisciplinary Black Feminisms and Queer Studies with a demonstrated history of community engagement, public history, and/or other public-facing approaches to scholarship. Ability to support our efforts in developing curricular and programmatic initiatives that involve the Commemorative to the Enslaved Peoples of Southern Maryland, engaging not only our students but also local, regional, and national constituencies, is desirable. We also welcome applicants whose intersectional work blends qualitative and quantitative methods and/or involves fields such as Digital Humanities and AI. An interest in attracting and retaining students from underrepresented groups is desirable. The development of an active research program involving undergraduates is encouraged. Salary range is $70,000 - $75,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
