Assistant Professor of Theater, Dance and Performance Studies: Scenography
The Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies Program in the Department of Performing Arts at St. Mary’s College of Maryland is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies: Scenography (scenery and costume) to begin August 2025. Position duties include designing sets and costumes for three main stage productions annually, supervising the costume shop, and teaching design-related courses including Elements of Design, upper-level courses in scenic and costume design, and topics courses in the Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies Program.
Qualifications: Applicants must have an M.F.A. in scenography/theater design or/and a Ph.D. in theater or a related discipline with expertise and professional experience in scenic and costume design. Salary range: $65k to $75k, depending on qualifications and experience.
Candidates who have experience with or interest in designing for new, student-generated work as well as work by established playwrights and choreographers are especially encouraged to apply, as are designers who have experience with or interest in anti-racist theater practice, theater, dance, and performance by artists from historically marginalized groups (for example, Global Majority/Black, Indigenous, and People of Color artists, people of marginalized genders, LGBTQIA+ people and people with disabilities), and musical theater.
All professors at St. Mary’s are expected to contribute to the college-wide core curriculum as well as to their departmental curriculum. An interest in attracting and retaining students from underrepresented groups is desirable. The development of an active research program involving undergraduates is encouraged.
