A minor in history complements a number of different majors and career fields. In addition to the diverse historical content you will encounter in your courses, we are confident that you also take with you a solid foundation in critical thinking and research. These skills contribute to the likelihood of success in a wide range of graduate programs.
Many students with a strong history background attend law school, many to tier 1 and tier 2 schools such as Cornell, Penn, Northwestern, William and Mary, and Georgetown, as well as our fine local schools at Maryland, Baltimore, and American University.
There is always a demand for excellent teachers, and approximately 28% of history alums go into teaching. Many of whom go on to obtain a Masters of Teaching and certification. The Master of Arts in Teaching program at St. Mary’s College has an outstanding placement rate, putting our students on the path to a rewarding career. Others achieve success in fields such as public policy, international studies, Celtic Studies, Islamic Studies, and other fields such as museum studies, public history, library science, and even business and medicine, non-profits, higher education administration, government service, contracting firms, small business, and the creative arts.
