CREATE YOUR LEGACY
Planned Giving at St. Mary's College of Maryland offers a profound opportunity to leave a lasting legacy while enjoying a range of benefits. Through thoughtful consideration of various vehicles, donors can strategically manage their financial portfolios, potentially lessen tax liabilities, and create meaningful support for the College. A planned gift stands as a testament to the power of learning. Participating donors become members of the Mulberry Tree Society, a community of like-minded individuals committed to the College's enduring success – fostering a vibrant academic environment and ensuring that generations of students continue to benefit from a transformative education.
PLANNING & GIVING
Leveraging your assets to support the future of St. Mary’s College through a planned gift does not have to be complicated or intimidating. With a planned gift, you can create a legacy that meets your philanthropic interests and goals.
Bequests
- A bequest is a flexible and customizable gift of personal assets made through a will or living trust and specifies how your estate will be distributed after your lifetime. You can declare a specific dollar amount or specify a percentage of your estate for the College. Additionally, a bequest can be designated for an explicit purpose so you have peace of mind knowing your gift will be used as intended. To make a bequest, consult with an estate attorney and complete a letter of intent to inform the SMCM Foundation of your estate plans. Below is sample bequest language.
- Bequest of a Specific Dollar Amount
I hereby give, devise and bequeath ($DOLLARS) to the St. Mary’s College of Maryland Foundation Inc., a non-profit Maryland corporation, located at 18952 East Fisher Road, St. Mary’s City, MD 20686, Federal Tax ID #23-7152890, for St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s general use and purpose. - Bequest of a Percentage
I hereby give, devise and bequeath (PERCENTAGE%) of my total estate, determined as of the date of my death, to the St. Mary’s College of Maryland Foundation Inc., a non profit Maryland corporation, located at 18952 East Fisher Road, St. Mary’s City, MD 20686, Federal Tax ID #23-7152890, for St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s general use and purpose.
Beneficiary Designations
- Any retirement plan (IRA, 401(k), 403(b), pension), investment or bank account, life insurance policy or donor advised fund may be gifted by designating the College as a beneficiary. If you are interested in making a gift but are also concerned about your future needs, keep in mind that beneficiary designation gifts are among the most flexible of all charitable gifts. Even after you complete the beneficiary designation form, you can take distributions or withdrawals from your retirement, investment, or bank account and continue to freely use your account. To make the College a beneficiary of your residual assets, complete a beneficiary designation form and submit it to your plan/policy administrator; be sure to complete a letter of intent to inform the SMCM Foundation of your plans.
IRA Charitable Rollover Gifts
- Another way you can support the College through a retirement plan is through an IRA charitable rollover, which enables annual tax-free gifts directly from your individual retirement account. Contact your IRA plan administrator to make a gift.
Charitable Gift Annuities
- In exchange for a gift of cash or appreciated assets, you can receive an immediate income tax deduction and guaranteed annuity income for the duration of your lifetime, or the lifetime of others designated by you. The payout rate is determined by the beneficiary’s age(s), as recommended by the American Council on Gift Annuities.

IMPACT
R. Scott Raspa ’86 discusses the value of the Learning through Experiential and Applied Discovery (LEAD) initiative at St. Mary’s College of Maryland and why he included the College in his estate plans. Learn More
“Making a planned gift to St. Mary’s College was a straightforward and interactive way to create a legacy for the school I love. I was able to gift part of my estate to support the areas of greatest need for the College and help ensure that students will have access to the type of quality, liberal arts education that I received.”
– Donna L. Denny ’81
“Designing a bequest for St. Mary’s College was the right type of gift for me. I was able to give to the General Scholarship Fund and support students. It’s great knowing I will be able to help young people who might not otherwise have the opportunity to pursue a college degree.”
– Patricia Anne Bolgiano
“By directing part of my estate to St. Mary’s College, I’m creating a legacy that will benefit tomorrow’s students and ensure access to a first-rate liberal arts education.”
– Donald R. Stabile
