Change from Within: Women, Islam, and Social Justice
Aisha Rahman, Esq.
Executive Director, KARAMAH: Muslim Women Lawyers for Human Rights
KARAMAH: Muslim Women Lawyers for Human Rights was founded with the express purpose to lift up the voices of amazing Muslim women, both modern and in our shared history, so that the world could learn first-hand about their lives and their experiences. Too often, people want to speak for women. KARAMAH knew that an organization needed to exist that provided a platform for Muslim women to tell their own stories. During this talk, Aisha Rahman, executive director of KARAMAH, will share with the audience a historical perspective of Muslim women’s role in the public square. Unfortunately, there is a misunderstanding among people (Muslim and otherwise) that Muslim women have not been part of the public square. She will shatter this misunderstanding by sharing stories from Islamic history of amazing women who have been instrumental in social justice movements. Rahman will also share her personal journey to KARAMAH and its work to educate women leaders globally.
