Main Stage Productions
As part of our annual season of events, TFMS produces three main stage shows in the 200-seat Bruce Davis Theater. Directed by the TFMS faculty, guest artists, or, on occasion, exceptional TFMS students, our main stage productions encompass the widest possible range of theatrical forms, genres, periods, and experiment, and might include a Shakespeare, a Japanese kyôgen or Noh performance, an American classic, or a musical, like Happy End, The Threepenny Opera, Blood Brothers, Hair, or Cabaret.
Film Series
Complementing our annual main stage theater season is the TFMS film series. The film series brings to campus internationally acclaimed, award-winning filmmakers who screen and discuss their work, visit media production and film studies classes, and meet informally with TFMS students during their two-three day residencies at the College. Recent series have focused on environmental film, feminist film and filmmakers, hybrid and experimental documentaries, and animation and collage. All film series are free and open to the public.
Other Events
TFMS supplements its production season and film series with occasional guest artist residencies and/or shows designed specifically for touring to community schools. Guest artists may direct or design main stage shows, or may be members of regional, national, or international theater companies, such as Bread and Puppet Theater, that holds workshops and performances for the College and local communities.
A sample of visiting guest artists includes Nobel Prize-winning Nigerian playwright Wole Soyinka; performance artists Peggy Shaw, Robbie McCauley, and John O’Neal; filmmakers Alan Berliner, Su Friedrich, Yung Chang, and Connie Field; and Teatro Luna, the Chicago-based all-Latina performance ensemble co-founded by SMCM theater alum Coya Paz Brownrigg (’97).
