Peer mentors act as role models for DeSousa-Brent Scholars. They guide new students in making the transition to college life, serve as classroom assistants, and organize special events.

CORE Mentors
Advanced undergraduate students (with junior or senior standing) at St. Mary’s College of Maryland can apply to be Peer Mentors for the First Year Seminars.
CORE Peer Mentors help plan seminars, facilitate “5th Hour” events, and provide an advanced student perspective within the Seminars. They receive academic credit by concurrently enrolling in CORE401: Peer Mentoring Practicum.
How to Apply
Three positions available; call for applications will go out in February.
Applications must include:
- A letter that details your interest
- Your class standing
- Overall GPA
- Why you think they would be a good peer mentor
- Resume
- The name of one faculty reference
- The section or sections of the First Year Seminar for which you would want to be considered
DB Peer Mentors
Peer Mentors are an integral part of the DeSousa-Brent Scholars Program. They serve as a liaison between the College, faculty, and first-year DeSousa-Brent Scholars.
Like the CORE Peer Mentors, the DB Peer Mentors help lead classroom discussions and provide an advanced student perspective within seminars; however, they also provide crucial social support, being Scholars who have themselves just completed their first year at St. Mary’s College. They receive academic credit by concurrently enrolling in DBSP301: DeSousa-Brent Mentor I and DBSP302: DeSousa-Brent Mentor II.
How to Apply
Three positions available; call for applications will go out in February.
Requirements:
- Sophomore standing
- Must be a St. Mary’s College full-time student
- Good academic standing (minimum 2.5 GPA)
- Knowledgeable about the campus
- Have strong oral and written communication skills
- Enthusiastic about St. Mary’s College
Summer Bridge Mentors
Like the DB Peer Mentors, Summer Bridge Mentors are integral to the DeSousa-Brent Scholars Program. They are the first to welcome first-year scholars to St. Mary’s College.
Summer mentors help with:
- Scholar recruitment
- Summer Bridge Programming (including fall registration and transportation)
- Event hosting
- Summer mentors receive training, housing, a meal plan, and a modest stipend.

Fifteen positions available; call for applications will go out in February.
Requirements:
- Must be a St. Mary’s College full-time student
- Good Academic standing (minimum 2.5 GPA)
- Knowledgeable about the campus
- Have strong oral and written communication skills
