Homer L. Dodge Award for Excellence in Teaching

Established in 1985 by the late Norton T. Dodge, faculty emeritus, to recognize excellence in teaching. Introduced by Susan Goldstine, professor of mathematics
Presented by Nancy R. Dodge

Sandy Ganzell, professor of mathematics

Originally from Brooklyn, New York, Sandy has lived in New Hampshire, Texas, California and The Gambia, but now resides happily in St. Mary's County, even farther south than the College. His mathematics specialties are knot theory and combinational game theory. When he's not doing math, you can often find him climbing at the rock wall, teaching jujutsu, playing ultimate or tuning pianos.

Norton T. Dodge Award for Scholarly and Creative Achievement by a Junior Faculty Member

Established in 2003 by Don Stabile, faculty emeritus, to recognize excellence in scholarly and creative achievement. Presented by Nancy R. Dodge

Soon Bin Jang, assistant professor of educational studies

Soo Bin has a background is in elementary education and curriculum studies where she has focused on school knowledge and its replication in education policy. She has also written about student-teacher relationships in a classroom using post-structural theories on difference. Her current work is on curriculum-making policies and education for democracy. She earned her B.A. and M.A. in education from Ewha Womans University in Korea and got her PhD in curriculum instruction and teacher education and educational policy from Michigan State University. She teaches courses in elementary education, reading and literacy, and educational policy.

Jordan Teaching Exemplar Award

Established in 2017 to recognize members of the St. Mary's College community who exhibit exemplary teaching within or beyond the traditional classroom of the College. Presented by Tuajuanda Jordan, president

Gili Freedman, assistant professor of psychology

Gili Freedman’s research focuses on two lines of inquiry within social psychology: the two-sided nature of social rejection and creating interventions to combat biases. Her work on rejection examines how people reject, why they do so, how they are perceived, and what the consequences are for both parties. In her research on biases and interventions, she focuses on creating game and narrative interventions to reduce interpersonal biases and their negative effects, with an emphasis on gender biases in the context of science, technology, engineering and math.

The Andy Kozak Faculty Contribution to Student Life Award

Established in 2011 by Don Stabile to recognize faculty members who are active participants in the student life of the College.

Ellen Kohl, assistant professor of environmental studies

As a researcher and a teacher, Ellen is interested in how multiple, intersecting forms of oppression impact human-environment interactions. She examines how compounding socio-spatial processes, developed and perpetuated by urban and environmental policies, contribute to places of persistent injustice in the United States. Ellen is also interested in the science-policy interface - examining how scientific knowledge is produced, how it is interpreted in different settings, what counts as knowledge, and how these processes impact the development and implementation of environmental policies.

Dorothy Reed, caretaker I

Dorothy Reed, caretaker I, is from Mechanicsville, Maryland. Dorothy has worked at St. Mary’s College for 16 years and says she enjoys her work. When she’s not at work, she likes to cook and clean. The students who live in Queen Anne residence hall make her happy. “They’re so nice. They welcome me and say good morning every single day.”

Established in 2017 by President Jordan and presented to an individual or group whose actions and deeds epitomize the St. Mary's Way. Presented by Tuajuanda Jordan, president

Lawrence Leak '76, St. Mary's College of Maryland Trustee

Lawrence Leak ’76 started his professional career as a social studies teacher at Great Mills High School in St. Mary’s County. He went on to earn a master’s degree and PhD in educational administration and supervision, serving at University of Maryland College Park, Morgan State University and Towson University. He became the vice provost for academic affairs at the University of Maryland, University College in 2003 and served as acting provost and chief academic officer (2005-2006) and interim provost and chief academic officer until his retirement in 2007. He has served on the St. Mary’s College Board of Trustees since 2005.

Department Award in Anthropology

Established in 1983 to recognize outstanding scholarship in the discipline.

Emma Bradshaw

Emma Bradshaw is from Potomac, Maryland, and a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Lambda Alpha honor societies. Emma is president of the Anthropology Club, an anthropology tutor and a collection assistant in the Boyden Gallery. Emma plans to work for a year before beginning a master's program in museum studies.

Sophie Hannah

Sophie Hannah, of Bethesda, Maryland, is president of the Alpha Iota Kappa Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta history honor society and has presented research at its Mid-Atlantic conference. Sophie is also a member of Lambda Alpha anthropology honor society and vice president of the Anthropology Club. Sophie's SMP research was presented at University of Maryland's 15th Annual ANTHRO+ Conference. A research assistant for Professor Malena's Women of the Ancient World project, Sophie plans on graduate school after working for a year. back to section top ↑

McCutcheon Family Art Award

Established in 1991 by Janet McCutcheon in memory of her husband, Frank ’89, to recognize a junior or senior art student who demonstrates promise as an artist.

Tony Rayo

Tony Rayo is from Waldorf, Maryland, and will go to graduate school to pursue a combination of alternative photography and technology.

The Linda Nochlin Prize

Named for path-breaking American feminist art historian Linda Nochlin, the award recognizes a junior or senior for scholarly accomplishment and overall excellence in the study of art history.

Katherine Thor Straten

Katherine Thor Straten, of Catonsville, Maryland, is a member of Phi Beta Kappa honor society and president of SIAM. Katherine is a Boyden Gallery assistant, a collections intern at Historic St. Mary's City, and a member of the Dance Club. Katherine plans to enter the work force as a curatorial research assistant for an art museum in the DMV area.

William Thomas Rowe Endowed Scholarship in Art

Established in 2008 by the Rowe family to benefit art majors. Selection is based on portfolios of work and essays. Presented by Jane Rowe

Meredith Bromley

Asian Studies Award

Established in 2005 by the Asian Studies faculty to recognize exceptional contributions to the cross-disciplinary area of Asian Studies.

GraceAnne Nelson

GraceAnne Nelson, of Cecil County, Maryland, is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Alpha Theta honor societies and was a 2022 State Department Critical Language Scholarship awardee. President of the APAC Club and co-founder and vice president of Zero Degrees Dance Club, GraceAnne is also a student ambassador and tutor in Chinese. After graduation, GraceAnne will do part-time work for the Asian American Justice Advocacy nonprofit organization at the same time as interviewing with the National Security Agency. back to section top ↑

Casey Greenberg

Casey Greenberg is from Columbia, Maryland, and a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Beta Beta Beta honor societies. President of the Creative Writing Club, Casey also serves as vice president of Dance Club and treasurer of Stitchcraft Club and as an orientation leader. Casey is looking forward to presenting original research at the Ecological Society of America.

Biology Department Award for Academic Distinction and Service

Established for academic achievement and service to the biology program.

Jordan Manns

Jordan Manns, of Baltimore, Maryland, is a Dean's List student who interns with the Biology Department.

Outstanding Achievement in Principles of Biology

Established in 2003 to recognize a student who has demonstrated academic excellence and achievement in “Principles of Biology.”

Luka Ackerman

Luka Ackerman, of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, is a member of the American Chemical Society and in the SMACS/BOSS and Pre-Health Clubs. Luka also works out with the Fencing and Equestrian Clubs. Luka would like to become a surgeon and work with Doctors Without Borders one day.

The Mendel Award in Biology for Outstanding Achievement in the Second Year

Established in 2003 to recognize a student who has demonstrated academic excellence and achievement in genetics and also ecology and evolution.

Emily Friedman

Emily Friedman is from Owings Mills, Maryland. A biology and biochemistry double major, Emily plans to pursue a master's and PhD in genetics. back to section top ↑

Robert H. Goldsmith Award for Excellence in Chemistry

The Robert H. Goldsmith Award recognizes distinguished service to the department and academic achievement in chemistry.

Julia Kraft

Julia Kraft is from Gaithersburg, Maryland. A member of BOSS/SMACS and the Windsurfing Club, Julia plans to take a gap year to work and then to go to graduate school.

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Award for Excellence in Biochemistry

Awarded by the department to recognize distinguished service to the department and academic achievement in biochemistry.

Christopher Baidoo

Christopher Baidoo, of Frederick, Maryland, has earned his ASBMB certification and is a member of BOSS/SMACS. Christopher is active with the Jiu Jitsu Club and the African Student Association. Medical school is Christopher's long-range plan. back to section top ↑

Economics Faculty Award

Established in 1983 to recognize outstanding scholarship in the discipline.

Camden Butler

Camden Butler is from Towson, Maryland. At SMCM, Camden has worked in sports communication as announcer, camera operator and field operations. Camden's future plans are to work in economics, finance or sports analytics.

Louise Victoria Lusby Award

In honor of Louise Victoria Lusby who passed away in 2014. She graduated St. Mary’s College of Maryland in 2005 as the valedictorian and was a model student and a friend to many. Presented to a current student of high academic achievement in economics.

Yundi Shi

Yundi Shi, of Beijing, China is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Epsilon honor societies. Yundi is active with the Chess Club, the APAC Club, Zero Degrees Dance Club and the Nightingale Acapella Club. This fall, Yundi begins a master's program in data science for public policy at Georgetown University.

Deak Reynolds Economics Award

Established in 2003 by Deak Reynolds, to be given annually to an outstanding junior or senior majoring in economics.

Diana Clay

Diana Clay, of Damascus, Maryland, is on the varsity women's soccer team and is also a student ambassador. Diana would like to work in environmental economics. back to section top ↑

Educational Studies Book Award

Brianna Englert

Brianna Englert, of St. Mary's County, Maryland, is a student manager at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics and Recreation Center and the historian for the Dance Club. Brianna plans to complete the MAT Program and then join the Peace Corps.

Nefret Perunko

Nefret Perunko is from Salisbury, Maryland. A member of Sigma Tau Delta and Chi Alpha Sigma honor societies, Nefret is co-president of SAAC and a four-year member of the varsity women's soccer team. Nefret begins the MAT Program in July.

English Language & Literature

English Department Award for Scholarship

Recognizes the English major who best exemplifies the department’s ideals of literary scholarship, based on his or her knowledge of the field, critical capacity, intellectual curiosity, and scholarly writing.

Margaret Neuman

Margaret Neuman, of Arnold, Maryland, is a peer tutor in the Writing and Speaking Center. Margaret is a member of the Offshore Sailing Club and co-secretary of the Creative Writing Club. After graduating with a major in English and a minor in French, Margaret plans to pursue a master's degree within the English field of study and a career in editing and publishing.

Margaret Eagle Dixon Award in Literature

Established in 1997 in memory of her mother, a 1904 graduate, by Adele Tomey ’39.

Nefret Perunko

Kyra Smith

Kyra Smith, of Baltimore, Maryland, is a DeSousa-Brent Scholar and treasurer of the Art Club. Kyra plans to write adult fiction novels.

Michael S. Glaser Writing Award

Given annually to a gifted and dedicated writer who has worked to hone his or her craft during his or her time at St. Mary’s College and shows exceptional promise for future achievement.

Eleanor Pratt

Eleanor Pratt, of Leonardtown, Maryland, is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Alpha Theta honor societies. Editor-in-chief of The Point News, Eleanor is also the lead intern with the Center for Career and Professional Development and a student assistant to the History Department. This fall, Eleanor will pursue a master's degree in history at The George Washington University.

Edward T. Lewis Poetry Award

Established in 1993 in honor of the 10-year anniversary of Edward T. Lewis’ presidency at St. Mary’s College to recognize promising young poets.

Asenath Weaver

Asenath Weaver, of Chesapeake Beach, Maryland, is president of AVATAR literary magazine and a member of the Dean's List. Asenath plans to pursue a career as a singer/songwriter in Richmond, Virginia. back to section top ↑

Kate Chandler Award for the Study of Literature, Writing and the Environment

Established in 2016, one award is given to a student completing a St. Mary’s Project in environmental humanities and one award is given to a student beyond the first year engaged in undergraduate research or writing in the environmental humanities.

Lilianna Bowman

Lilianna Bowman, of Westminster, Maryland, is a member of the varsity swim team and the Chi Alpha Sigma athletic honor society. Vice president of the Sustainability Club, Lilianna would like to pursue a career in marine science research and science communication.

Aidan James Ellis

Aidan James Ellis, of Barnard, Vermont, hopes that one day his writing will help to make to world a cleaner place for future generations. After graduation, AJ plans to begin work while he continues to expand his portfolio. He is currently applying to jobs at various universities and public school systems on the East Coast. Niamh Connell

Niamh Connell, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, is a member of Phi Alpha Theta honor society as well as a LEAD intern with the Center for Career and Professional Development. Captain and vice president of Ultimate Frisbee Club, Niamh is considering going to law school or business school.

Chrissy Ringel

Chrissy Ringel, of Frederick, Maryland, is a member of Phi Alpha Theta honor society. After SMCM, Chrissy plans to earn a master's degree in either historic preservation or archival science.

Thomas M. Barrett Memorial Award for Undergraduate Research

Established in 2016 in honor of departed colleague, Tom Barrett. It is granted to a deserving history major for the purpose of furthering ongoing research.

Nicholas Howard

Nicholas Howard is from Elkridge, Maryland, and has been involved in SGA as well as residence life. Nicholas serves as an EMT for the Ridge Volunteer Rescue Squad. After graduation, Nicholas plans to study and teach internationally. He intends to use his love of languages and travel to participate in a "Teaching English as a Foreign Language" program around the world. Nicholas is also exploring healthcare careers that would allow him to serve others while using his knowledge of French and Chinese language and culture.

David Zhang is from Waldorf, Maryland. David is a DeSousa-Brent Scholar and a member of the APAC Club. David plans to work as a translator and travel the world.

Mary Claire Basso-Luca

Mary Claire Basso-Luca, of Olney, Maryland, is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Psi Chi honor societies and is vice president of Catholic Seahawks. Mary Claire's future plans include a graduate degree in counseling psychology.

Award for Excellence in Spanish

Kyra Feinauer

Kyra Feinauer is from Silver Spring, Maryland, and a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Beta Beta Beta and Chi Alpha Sigma honor societies. Active with the varsity volleyball team and president of the Women's Weighlifting Club, Kyra is also an intern with the Office of International Education. She plans to work as a medical assistant for an orthopedic surgeon and then apply to graduate school to become a physician assistant.

Mattie M. Key Award in Music

Established by a bequest of alumna Mattie Maddox Key to recognize excellence in music.

Sentiah Cole

Sentiah Cole is from Dundalk, Maryland. Principal cellist of the SMCM Symphony Orchestra, Sentiah is also an intern in the Music Department, a DeSousa-Brent Scholar and a member of the African Student Association. The Neuroscience Award

Established in 2007, it is given to a graduating senior with a minor (or student-designed major) in the neurosciences, who demonstrates superior depth of understanding, critical thinking, and research and communication skills in the field of neuroscience and participation over and above what is expected in the SMCM neurosciences program.

Mackenzie Ellis

Mackenzie Ellis is from Darlington, Maryland, and is president of the Neuroscience Club. Mackenzie plans to work for two years as a research assistant before pursuing a graduate degree in neuroscience. back to section top ↑

William James Prize

Established in 1986 to recognize superior understanding and written expression of philosophical discourse.

Dexter Mueller

Dexter Mueller is from Takoma Park, Maryland. A seven-time member of the Dean's List, Dexter is also captain of the varsity sailing team.

Henry Rosemont, Jr. Peace and Justice Award

Established in 2010 in honor of Professor Emeritus Henry Rosemont to recognize students who demonstrate commitment to social justice and peace issues through their academic work and/or practical engagement.

Hannah Yale

Hannah Yale, of Ventura, California, is a member of the Jewish Student Union and the Philosophy Club. After SMCM, Hannah plans plan to work in the nonprofit advocacy field and to study philosophy and bioethics in graduate school. back to section top ↑

Surisitee Motiram

Surisitee Motiram, of Millersville, Maryland, has been published in SlackWater journal and helped organize the APAC's Holi event in March 2023. A member of both the Chess and Burlesque Clubs, Surisitee's future plans include graduate school and working in refugee resettlement.

Jaxon O'Mara

Jaxon O'Mara, of Great Mills, Maryland, is a residence hall coordinator and member of the College Democrats. Jaxon hopes to work on progressive policy issues in the Maryland General Assembly.

Hampton Davey Award

Established by the Lee family in 2000 as a tribute to Associate Professor of Political Science Hampton “Red” Davey, recognizing an outstanding St. Mary’s College senior majoring in political science.

Emily Rudo

Emily Rudo, of Elkridge, Maryland, is SGA president and a member of Pi Sigma Alpha honor society as well as a member of the College's Strategic Planning Committee. Emily was editor of Open Water journal in 2022. Emily will attend law school in Maryland and plans a career in environmental law.

Public Policy Award

Established in 2000 to recognize academic excellence in the interdisciplinary major of public policy.

Lily Davison

Lily Davison, of Phoenix, Maryland, is a member of Chi Alpha Sigma and Pi Alpha Sigma honor societies. Captain of the women's varsity lacrosse team, Lily is also a member of Morgan's Message Club. Lisa Zsebedics Memorial Award

Established in 1985 in memory of Lisa Zsebedics, a former student, to recognize an outstanding first- or second-year student committed to understanding the human development process.

Giselle Harris

Giselle Harris, of Easton, Maryland, is a DeSousa-Brent Scholar and captain of the varsity tennis team. Giselle intends to complete a research program after graduation and then to pursue graduate study in industrial organizational social psychology.

Margaret Floy Washburn Award

Established in 1990 to recognize outstanding research in psychology.

Kathlyn Eckles

Kahlyn Eckles is from Westminster, Maryland, and a member of the Neuroscience Club. A tutor as well as a participant in Professor Freedman's research lab, Kahlyn will pursue a PhD in social neuroscience.

Psychology Major Award

Established in 1993 to recognize a psychology, human development, or human studies major who demonstrates a superior understanding of the themes and methods of that discipline.

Julia Fitzpatrick

Julia Fitzpatrick is from Stevensville, Maryland. Julia is the president of Psi Chi honor society and the secretary of Best Buddies. She was an orientation leader and has done directed research in clinical and social psychology. Julia enjoys baking and hiking. In the fall Julia will be attending the University of Missouri-St. Louis to pursue a PhD in clinical psychology.

Jaie M. Perrizo Human Services Award

Established in 1993 to recognize a junior or senior psychology, human development, or human studies major who demonstrates outstanding potential as a practitioner in human services.

Emily Shipley

Emily Shipley is from Annapolis, Maryland. Emily is a DeSousa-Brent Scholar, a peer health educator, a teaching assistant and a member of SAGE (Seahawks Advancing Graduate Engagement). Emily will pursue a master's program for clinical mental health counseling, followed by a PhD program in counselor education and supervision or counseling psychology.

Wilhelm Wundt Award

Established in 2003 to recognize a student’s excellence in quantitative and methodological course work.

Nicholas Ashenfelter

Samuel Leaman

Samuel Leaman is from Gaithersburg, Maryland, and a member of the varsity rowing team. After SMCM, Samuel plans to enlist in the Coast Guard and to pursue a job in environmental protection.

Torre M. Meringolo Theater Award

Established in 2009 to benefit rising juniors or seniors who demonstrate great promise in acting with preference given to first-generation students.

Owen Landinger

Owen Landinger, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a Landers and DeSousa-Brent scholar. Owen has been active in theater productions as well as men's rugby and hopes to pursue acting in the future. back to section top ↑

African & African Diaspora Studies Award

Established in 2018 by the African & African Diaspora Studies program to recognize a student minoring in the program who has demonstrated excellence in comprehending issues relating to Africa and the diasporic spread of Africans throughout the world.

Ja'Dell Webster

Ja'Dell Webster is from La Plata, Maryland, and currently serves as coordinator of IDEAA programming. A former IDEAA intern, Ja'Dell graduated in 2022. Graduate school for higher education leadership is Ja'Dell's long-range plan.

Rhoda-Stark Memorial Award in Gender Studies

Established in 2001 in memory of Richard H. Rhoda and John D. Stark by Mark A. Rhoda to recognize students who demonstrate excellence in research, writing, activism, and/or the performing arts that addresses gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender issues.

Cara Bond

Cara Bond is from Mount Airy, Maryland and is helping to form an undergraduate English Association for future students in the major and minor. Cara hopes to pursue graduate studies in playwriting or creative writing, editing or social media management.

Women, Gender & Sexuality Award

The WGSX Award for scholarship and social responsibility was established in 2006 by the women, gender and sexuality studies faculty to recognize students who have demonstrated excellence in both scholarly works and socially responsible pursuits.

Sophie Hannah

Sophie Hannah, of Bethesda, Maryland, is president of the Alpha Iota Kappa Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta history honor society and has presented research at its Mid-Atlantic conference. Sophie is also a member of Lambda Alpha anthropology honor society and vice president of the Anthropology Club. Sophie's SMP research was presented at University of Maryland's 15th Annual ANTHRO+ Conference. A research assistant for Professor Malena's Women of the Ancient World project, Sophie plans on graduate school after working for a year.

Female Scholar Athlete Award

Established in 1975 to recognize the female junior or senior varsity athlete with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.50 or better who has earned at least 32 semester-hours and who has played an important role on one or more varsity teams.

Hannah Gorel

Hannah Gorel, of Jessup, Maryland, is president of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics and three-time captain of the varsity tennis team. Hannah is an orientation leader and student ambassador coordinator and member of the Equestrian, Best Buddies and Dance Clubs. After graduation, Hannah will be working as a software engineer for Microsoft.

Nicolette Iacona

Nicolette Iacona, of Severna Park, Maryland, is a member of the women's varsity rowing team. Nicolette plans to attend graduate school to earn a master's degree in industrial psychology and art therapy.

Benjamin Atkins

Benjamin Atkins is from Columbia, Maryland and is a member of Chi Alpha Sigma, Omicron Delta Epsilon and Pi Sigma Alpha honor socities. Benjamin is a student ambassador and co-president of the Student Athlete Advisory Council and a member of the varsity baseball team. Benjamin will attend law school at the University of Maryland.

Geneva Boone Award for Outstanding St. Mary’s Project

Established in 1993 by Trustee Emerita Geneva Boone, who was instrumental in forming the St. Mary’s College of Maryland Foundation, to recognize students with outstanding St. Mary’s Projects.

Somya Sharma-Holt

Somya Sharma-Holt, of Silver Spring, Maryland, is a member of Alpha Kappa Delta honor society. Somya plans to pursue a career in industrial psychology and organizational development in the nonprofit sector.

Myron G. Marlay Award for Science

Established in 1999 by Maggie and Mike Marlay to recognize students with outstanding St. Mary’s Projects in biology, natural science, chemistry, physics, math or psychology.

Kahlyn Eckles

Kahlyn Eckles is from Westminster, Maryland, and a member of the Neuroscience Club. A tutor as well as a participant in Professor Freedman's research lab, Kahlyn will pursue a PhD in social neuroscience.

Emily Shipley

Emily Shipley is from Annapolis, Maryland. Emily is a DeSousa-Brent Scholar, a peer health educator, a teaching assistant and a member of SAGE (Seahawks Advancing Graduate Engagement). Emily will pursue a master's program for clinical mental health counseling, followed by a PhD program in counselor education and supervision or counseling psychology.

Co-president of the Pre-Health Club and coordinator of the Southern Maryland Brain Bee, Brayan is also a PASS Specialist and SAILS teaching assistant. Brayan is a member of the Seahawk Investment Club and the APAC Club. Brayan plans to earn a PhD in neuroscience and research the molecular players that play a role in learning, memory and related-health conditions.

Coopersmith Leadership Award

Established in 1974 by Trustee Emerita Esther Coopersmith and her husband, Jack Coopersmith, to recognize seniors with outstanding political leadership.

Emily Rudo

Emily Rudo, of Elkridge, Maryland, is SGA president and a member of Pi Sigma Alpha honor society as well as a member of the College's Strategic Planning Committee. Emily was editor of Open Water journal in 2022. Emily will attend law school in Maryland and plans a career in environmental law.

Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence in the First Year

Established in 2009 by Libby Nutt Williams, the Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence in the First Year was created to honor a first-year student who has excelled academically in his or her first semester at the College. Of particular importance is the student’s demonstrated achievements in his or her First Year Seminar.

Mahree Annan

Mahree Annan is from Mechanicsville, Maryland and is active with the SGA and the Sierra Club. A member of the 2026 Class Council, Mahree pursues grassroots research for campus community building. Mahree's future plans include graduate school for international relations and a career as an American diplomat serving overseas.

Board of Trustees Award

Established in 1987 by the Board of Trustees for distinguished contributions to the College.

Established in 1980 by the St. Mary’s College faculty to recognize outstanding students.

Sam Harper

Sam Harper is from Worton, Maryland. A teaching assistant and tutor as well as a member of the Kit Qat Club, Sam plans to become an English teacher at the secondary level and one day to be an author, playwright and director.

Maryland State Society DAR Scholarship Award

Established in 1998 to recognize students who demonstrate academic excellence. As of 2014, it is given in honor of Polly Bloedorn, Maryland Honorary State Regent.

Julia Milner

Julia Milner is from Middletown, Maryland. A member of Psi Chi and Nu Rho Sci honor societies as well as the Neuroscience Society, Julia is also on the varsity swim team. Julia plans to earn a graduate degree and her PhD in neuroscience and research Alzheimer's Disease.

Barbara Bershon Arts Alliance Award in Music

Presented by Ginni Stein. Established in 1991 by the Arts Alliance of St. Mary’s College of Maryland to recognize excellence in music. In 2004, named in honor of the Arts Alliance chair, 1998-2003.

Emma Huckabee

Emma Huckabee is from Lexington Park, Maryland. Active with the SMCM Chamber Singers and PING vocal ensemble, Emma also plays piano with the SMCM Jazz Band and in Brian Ganz's studio. Emma plans to teach piano full-time after graduation.

Kathy Glockner Arts Alliance Award for Theater Excellence

Presented by Ginni Stein. Established in 1992 by the Arts Alliance of St. Mary’s College of Maryland to recognize excellence in theater. In 2009, named in honor of the Arts Alliance chair, 2003-2008.

Shannon Lewis

Shannon Lewis is from Forest Hill, Maryland, and a resident assistant and orientation leader. Busy with the theater department, Shannon has been box office and stage manager as well as co-director. This summer, Shannon will work as an intern for Washington, D.C.'s Capital Fringe Festival.

Gale West Parmentier Arts Alliance Award for Creative Writing

Presented by Ginni Stein. Established in 1992 by the Arts Alliance of St. Mary’s College of Maryland to recognize excellence in creative writing. In 1999, named in honor of the Arts Alliance chair, 1993-1998.

Aidan Ellis

Aidan James Ellis, of Barnard, Vermont, hopes that one day his writing will help to make to world a cleaner place for future generations. After graduation, AJ plans to begin work while he continues to expand his portfolio. He is currently applying to jobs at various universities and public school systems on the East Coast. Wherever he ends up, he will continue his work with poetry and climate fiction.

Patti Runco Arts Alliance Award for Outstanding Work in the Annual Student Art Exhibit

Presented by Ginni Stein. Established in 1992 by the Arts Alliance of St. Mary’s College of Maryland to recognize excellence in studio art work in the Annual Student Exhibition. In 2004, named in honor of the Arts Alliance chair, 1988-1993.

Miranda Woodey

Miranda Woodey, of Waldorf, Maryland, is an art major. Miranda is considering a graduate degree in social practice art.

Virginia M. Stein Arts Alliance Award for Excellence in Film and Media Studies

Presented by Ginni Stein. Established in 2008 by the Arts Alliance of St. Mary’s College of Maryland to recognize a junior or senior film and media studies major for artistic accomplishment and academic excellence in the classroom.

Brenton Parker

Brenton Parker is from California, Maryland. Brenton is a former recipient of the Torre M. Meringolo Theater Award and was in the fall production of "Airness."

John R. Petruccelli Memorial Award

Presented by Stephen Petruccelli. Established in 1981 in memory of John Rocco Petruccelli ’81 to recognize juniors who demonstrate devotion to the College, the cause of education, and responsibility to society.

Rachael Freeman

Rachael Freeman, of Baltimore, Maryland, is a member of Omicron Delta Epsilon honor society and an All-Conference, All-Academic member of the women's varsity lacrosse team. Rachael was on the winning team of the 2022 iOme College Challenge and is treasurer for the Morgan's Message Club. Rachael is the incoming Global Independence Intern at Deloitte.

David and Ginny Rosenbaum Award for Excellence in Journalism

Presented by Susan Messitte. Established in 2006 to recognize demonstrated excellence in journalism.

Eleanor Pratt

Eleanor Pratt, of Leonardtown, Maryland, is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Alpha Theta honor societies. Editor-in-chief of The Point News, Eleanor is also the lead intern with the Center for Career and Professional Development and a student assistant to the History Department. This fall, Eleanor will pursue a master's degree in history at The George Washington University.

Thomas Penfield Jackson Award for Civic Responsibility and Democratic Citizenship

Established in 2014 in memory of the Honorable Thomas Penfield Jackson to recognize students who desire to pursue careers in public service or the law, international relations or other activities that promote civil society.

Kyleigh Elmore Cooper

Kyleigh Elmore Cooper, of St. Mary's County, Maryland, is president of the Pre-Law Advisory Network and the Maryland Student Legislature. Currently interning with the St. Mary's County Public Defender's Office, Kyleigh's career plan is to go to law school and become a public defender.

Weitzel Research Award

Established in 2004 by Trustee Emeritus Harry Weitzel to benefit students who pursue undergraduate summer research in the sciences or the humanities.

Blaine Greene

Blaine Greene, of California, Maryland, is a peer mentor, a member of Take One Improv, and a member of the Dean's List. Blaine has a black belt in Taekwondo and has been a master instructor since 2021.

Gabriela Miranda

Gabriela Miranda, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, is a DeSousa-Brent Scholar and Sum Primus mentor. President of BOSS/SMACS and secretary of the Pre-Health Club, Gabriela is also active with Zero Degrees Dance Club. Gabriela's future plans include medical school to specialize in anesthesiology. Many of today’s awards – department awards, general College awards, and awards for faculty and staff – are provided by generous alumni, families, and friends of the College through the St. Mary’s College of Maryland Foundation. The Foundation helps ensure that the College has the resources to foster the excellence that our National Public Honors College requires and to prepare the next generation of engaged, global leaders. Phi Beta Kappa

The Phi Beta Kappa Society was established at the College of William and Mary in 1776. The Greek letters that give the society its name mean “love of wisdom, the guide of life.” From the outset, election to Phi Beta Kappa has signified outstanding achievement in the attainment of an education in the liberal arts. The Zeta Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at St. Mary’s College of Maryland was founded in 1997. Students completing their junior or senior year are elected primarily on the basis of scholarly achievement, broad cultural interest, and good character.
