Varsity Sailing

From Humble beginnings, The St. Mary's College Seahawks have risen to capture fifteen national sailing titles. In 1962, sailing was a physical education class offered in two Penguin sailboats. It wasn't until 1980 that the College established a varsity sailing program. Then St. Mary's sailors competed with those of other Mid-Atlantic Schools. Today, the River Center houses one of the premier sailing programs in the country and Seahawk sailors have earned an international reputation. Nearly 150 of our sailors have been named All-Americans. Three sailors and one coach have participated in the Olympic Games, where one sailor earned a silver medal. Two alumnae are Rolex Yachtswomen of the Year. And so, in this River Center, we celebrate not only the river but also our championship teams that sail upon it.
