It is 150 years after the Civil War and the Confederate flag still generates fierce emotions. What provokes such strong feelings? What did the flag mean then and what has it come to mean today? John M. Coski, historian and vice-president at The Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, Virginia, will discuss the history of the Confederate flag as a controversial symbol at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29 in Auerbach Auditorium of St. Mary’s Hall, St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

Coski is one of the nation's foremost authorities on the flag and is author of “The Confederate Battle Flag: America's Most Embattled Emblem.”  Coski's lecture is part of Museum Studies Week and is sponsored by the college’s Museum Studies Program. The event is free and open to the public.
