The 12th annual John R. Petruccelli 5K Run/Walk will start at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, as part of St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s Hawktober Festival and Family Weekend. The run, in honor of John Petruccelli, a student bicyclist killed by a drunk driver, is open to all and consists of a 3.1 mile mostly paved course through scenic Historic St. Mary’s City. The fun walk is 1.5 miles on a paved path.
Race-day registration and packet pick-up for pre-registrants begins at 7:15 a.m. at the college’s Rectory. The Chesapeake Bay Running Club is the official timekeeper. Pre-registrations are accepted until Sept. 28 at www.smcm.edu/alum/petruccelli. The event is free for children under 12, $10 for St. Mary’s students and youth ages 12-18, $20 for alumni, parents, faculty/staff, friends, and community, $25 for all on race day. Proceeds go to SafeRide, which gives students rides home at night, and college scholarships.
St. Mary's College of Maryland, designated the Maryland state honors college in 1992, is ranked one of the best public liberal arts schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. More than 2,000 students attend the college, nestled on the St. Mary's River in Southern Maryland.
