Announcing Alumni Awards
Steven Thur ’00 is this year’s Outstanding Young Alumni Award recipient for his outstanding accomplishments.J. Howard Hixson’73 nominated him, noting his career as acting coral division chief in NOAA’s reef conservation program and as the highest ranked state soccer referee in the U.S. Soccer Federation.
At St. Mary’s, Steve studied the chemical defense of marine sponges in a national marine reserve in Belize and was a teaching assistant for the College’s tropical marine biology class on the island. He received his Ph.D. in marine studies from the University of Delaware Graduate College of Marine Studies. He is married to Rebecca Banwarth ’99.
Christopher Carl Kohler ’73 is this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award recipient. Chris received a B.S. in biology from St. Mary’s, an M.S. from the University of Puerto Rico in marine sciences/aquaculture and a Ph.D. in fisheries science from Virginia Tech. He is a professor of zoology and director of the fisheries at Illinois Aquaculture Center at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
Chris’ career areas of expertise include aquaculture, fisheries management and fish ecology. Recent accomplishments include research on the development of plant-based diets for fish, is the senior co-editor of a major college level and professional text published by the American Fisheries Society, and has given over 200 presentations at scientific meetings and over 60 presentations as an invited speaker.
Chris will be retiring from Southern Illinois University Carbondale this October. His wife, Charlotte Kohler ’75, is also a St. Mary’s graduate.
