Professional Development Schools (Defined)
A Professional Development School (PDS) is a collaboratively Planned and implemented partnership for the academic and clinical preparation of interns and the continuous professional development of both school system and institution of higher education (IHE) faculty. The focus of the PDS partnership is improved student performance through research-based teaching and learning. A PDS may involve a single or multiple schools, school systems and IHEs and may take many forms to reflect specific partnership activities and approaches to improving both teacher education and PreK-12 schools. Because the College works with the entire St. Mary’s County Public Schools organization, coordinating placements for field experiences, after-school tutoring and other literacy support, and for internships at the county level, we conceptualize our relationship as a “Professional Development Collaborative.” Each year we do have “concentration sites” at which interns are placed in groups in order to facilitate their collaborative action research projects and professional development for all parties, but in any given year, we maintain relationships with additional schools and have representation from these schools in the governance process.
