Getting Hands-On Experience

St. Mary's chemistry and biochemistry majors were busy this summer participating in research and medical internships on campus and around the country.  Ashton Engdahl (above) spent her summer developing a green synthesis of functionalized pyrroles on campus with a paid research internship through our campus SMURF program.

Awards Aplenty in New Orleans

A generous contribution from the John J. Leidy Foundation allowed eight St. Mary's students to attend the 245th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in New Orleans where they presented posters describing their research.  Josh Olexa ('13) explains his poster to a judge, and former American Chemical Society president, in the Speak Simply Contest where students were judged on their ability to explain their research. St. Mary's was well represented, as Josh and Greg Triegger ('13) were both awarded for their posters.

Relatively small classes, lots of one-on-one interactions and great undergraduate research opportunities allow the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at SMCM to offer an outstanding education to our students.  We offer degrees in biochemistry and chemistry, with an American Chemical Society (ACS) certified track in chemistry.  Our close proximity to Washington D.C. and Baltimore, coupled with our excellent reputation, has led to many of our students finding jobs and internships in the sciences.  The diverse research opportunities at St. Mary’s help make our students especially competitive for acceptance into the best graduate programs and provides us with the opportunity to teach our students skills that would not typically be available in an undergraduate program.  It isn’t hard to see why we are so proud of our students’ accomplishments; we have a challenging curriculum, provide them with the tools to succeed, and nurture them along the way.  We are the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and we have our students’ best interests in mind.
