Student Responsibilities/Benefits:
We now have the hardware to establish a subnetwork of the college network (cs.smcm.edu) which would expand the possibilities for upper-level CS courses to include greater applications in areas such as networking, web hosting, and computer security. During the 2011-12 year, a Fellow was paid to help set up and test our subnetwork servers and coordinate with the Office of Information Technology for deployment. This coming year, the Fellow would act as the sysadmin (systems administrator) for this subnetwork, working in our computer administration room (162 Schaefer) to maintain the necessary hardware, software firewalls and other security measures, and helping faculty manage software on the machines in the CS Labs. We will be deploying our subnetwork over the next 6 months (pending OIT approval and support). Our Fellow will maintain these servers and the related accounts with supervision from Dr. Read and Dr. Alan Jamieson.
Student Qualifications:
A qualified student would be a junior or senior Computer Science major who had excelled in the introductory CS courses, as well as in Networking (COSC 336).
