Responsibilities and benefits to the student:

This fellow will work with the Office of Student Activities to create programming and activities for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) student population.  Using LGBTQ student development theory, the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS)’s standard for LGBT Programs, and resources from the Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals, the fellow will design and implement programs and activities that best suit the St. Mary’s Community.

The fellow will be expected to assess LGBTQ student needs through surveys, open forums, and needs assessments.  Utilizing results from these instruments, the fellow will be able to design monthly LGBTQ student events and develop outreach to the LGBTQ community through in-person and web-based mediums (bulletin board, website. and social media).    In addition, office resources will need to be developed based on the results.

Programs and services must be coordinated with SGA clubs and academic and administrative offices (e.g. STARS, FUSE, SGA Programs Board, WGSX, Service and Social Change, Counseling and Health Services, Residence Life, Multicultural, etc.).  The fellow will coordinate the following annual programs:  Welcome Back Socials, National Coming Out Day, SMCM Trans* Day of Remembrance, Gaypril, and Lavender Graduation.

This position requires the fellow to perfect the four fundamental elements of a liberal arts education.  By creating these new programs, the student must be able to gather information and critically analyze what programs and services to provide.  The student must communicate with students, faculty, staff, and visitors about the many ways we support LGBTQ students (written and orally). 

In addition, the fellow will gain valuable leadership experience by working independently.  Event planning and marketing skills will be developed as well.   The student will leave this position with strong skills necessary for jobs in higher education, non-profits, or LGBTQ advocacy.

Qualifications and unique application instructions:

Candidates must have strong interpersonal and organizational skills.  Event planning, web and social media, and marketing/publicity experience preferred.  Candidates should have a strong passion and appreciation of the needs of LGBTQ students.
