Employer FAQ
Thank you for your interest in the bright and talented students of St. Mary's College of Maryland! If you don't see your question here, please let us know at careercenter@smcm.edu!
NOTE! We are collaborating with several other selective Mid-Atlantic colleges to host a virtual job fair on Tuesday, April 2! Click here to learn more and register!
1. How can I advertise a part- or full-time position announcement?
The Seahawk Opportunity Network or "Op-Net" is now operational! Click here to access the registration page. After your employer profile is approved you will be able to post and manage manage open job and internship positions for students and alumni, and to take applications through the site if you so choose.
2. How can I find an intern to work with my organization?
We have recently migrated our internship listings to Op-Net (see above), which means that you now have the ability to list your own internship opportunities! If you would prefer to have us create a permanent internship listing on your behalf, please send an email to careercenter@smcm.edu with the following information: Organization name, website, point of contact, position details, compensation, qualifications, and application instructions. We welcome both paid and volunteer internship listings, but reserve the right to determine suitability for academic credit. If you have already identified an SMCM student for your opening, we will work with you and the student to facilitate approval and registration for credit (details available here). If you are new to supervising interns or if you would like to consider ways to improve the experience of interns at your site, please read our Guide for Site Supervisors. It is also important for potential sites to be aware of the criteria for unpaid interns from the Fair Labor Standards Act.
3. I'm serving as the site supervisor for an SMCM intern. What do I need to do?
The first step is to support the student in completing their Learning Agreement by providing specific details about work responsibilities and opportunities for learning. Our Guide for Site Supervisors will assist you in orienting and managing your intern, particularly if you have not had one before. At the end of the internship you will be asked to provide an evaluation of your intern's performance (mid-point feedback is also encouraged). If you have any questions or concerns about your intern's experience or the credit internship program, please contact us at 240-895-4203 or careercenter@smcm.edu.
4. How do I arrange a recruitment visit?
We are happy to host employers on campus for individual tabling sessions, interviews, and presentations. A table in the common area of the Campus Center from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. provides maximum exposure to students during the high-traffic lunch period. You are welcome to bring presentation boards, brochures, giveaways, or a computer (battery power is best, but please let us know if you need access to an outlet). After tabling, space can also be reserved for one-on-one student meetings, interviews, or a late-afternoon group presentation. To make arrangements for a recruiting visit, please contact us at 240-895-4203 or careercenter@smcm.edu. Recruitment brochures can be sent to: SMCM Career Development Center, 18952 E. Fisher Rd., St. Mary's City, MD, 20686.
5. How can I get involved with CDC programs?
If you would be interested in serving as a mentor for current students or participating in workshops, networking events, or other career related programs, please email us at careercenter@smcm.edu. There are many opportunities for participation, and we welcome your ideas for new programs and partnerships!
