Students who experience a family, health, or other personal emergency requiring them to miss classes should contact the Office of Academic Services at 240-895-4388 (ext. 4388 on campus), providing documentation (verification from a physician or emergency room, copy of a program for a funeral or obituary, etc.) The Assistant Vice President of Academic Services will then notify professors and other appropriate staff members on behalf of the student. Students should still contact professors individually, explaining their circumstances, and asking faculty members whether or not, given the length of their anticipated absence from classes, completing the course is feasible. Note that because in many classes, discussion and student interaction is a large part of the learning process, faculty may determine that dropping or withdrawing from the course is the best option.
